ELEPHANT FITTED WITH A CONTACT LENS

An elephant at a Dutch zoo has become the first in Europe to be fitted with a contact lens. Win Thida, a 45-year-old Asian elephant residing at Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo, injured her eye during an altercation with a fellow elephant that left her with a scratched cornea. The scratch caused her eye to continue watering and she had trouble keeping it open due to increased glare associated with a damaged cornea.

The zoo called in veterinarian Anne-Marie Verbruggen who has had experience fitting horses with contact lenses to help Win...

It is a bizarre thought to think that we are living in the future. The glasses are fitted with speakers and scent emitters and are “an attempt to encourage face-to-face communication with emotional and memorable sound and smell experiences”.

The project was led by Keio University PhD student Yongsoon Choi, who lists his research interests as ‘the research of relationships between human emotion and variable expressions on the clothing”. He presented his...

Video Games: Are they damaging your vision?

Video games are rapidly improving and in 30 years we have gone from vector (shapes and lines) to sprite (2D pixelated images) to polygon (3D graphics). Video games are also one of the most popular forms of media with the Call of Duty Franchise selling over 100 million copies. That's at least 200 million eyes looking at a TV for on average 9 hours a week or 19 days a year.

Love at First Sight Means 8.2 Seconds of Eye Contact

SAY IT WITH YOUR EYES THIS VALENTINE’S DAY

It is said that our eyes are the "windows to our soul" outwardly conveying our feelings without words or movement. Love at first sight is the instantaneous attraction that is felt during the first visual contact with a person...or 8.2 seconds of eye contact. Studies have shown that love at first sight is possible, taking just milliseconds for the brain to react after locking eyes on the one

New York psychologist, Professor Arthur Arun, has been studying the...

                Ultraviolet radiation and your eyes

Despite 60 per cent of Australian adults being concerned about UV damage to their eyes , nearly half of them fail to always wear sunglasses or UV protective lenses on sunny days. Accumulated UV exposure to your ryes can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration (a leading cause of blindness), cancer and pterygium (a fleshy growth on the cornea). Even short bursts of unprotected UV exposure can lead to eye pain, irritation and sensitivity to light. The key to protection from harmful UV light is to start young and make it part of your child's...
