Wearing
contact lenses will open up all types of opportunities
for you by removing the restriction of glasses. Contact
lenses allow you to participate in sport and social
activities while seeing clearly in addition to the many
spectacle lens options we offer.
Gerry
& Johnson Optometrists are at the forefront of modern
contact lenses - we use the latest contact lenses to
benefit the health of your eye, and maximize your comfort
and vision. We will always offer you the best possible
contact lens option for you. We also trial new, up-and-coming
lenses, so you can be one of the first people in Australia
to wear particular lens, before anybody else!
At Gerry
& Johnson Optometrists we can provide you with the
following contact lens options:
Rigid
Gas Permeable lenses (RGPs)
As the name suggests, RGP lenses
are inflexible, specialty contact lenses which are
available to correct the vision of practically any
type of prescription - be it short sightedness, long
sightedness or astigmatism in any degree. They are
often worn by people with very high spectacle prescriptions
because they provide better vision, more options and
are healthier for the eyes than soft conventional
or disposable contact lenses.
RGP lenses can be worn on a daily
wear basis, or can be designed for extended wear -
wearing the lenses day and night; including while
sleeping. While there are currently soft disposable
contact lenses which are suitable for extended wear,
these only cover a certain range of prescriptions;
whereas RGP extended wear is available to a much greater
number of people.
Custom Soft Spherical/Toric
Lenses
These contact lenses are specially
designed to the individual size and prescription requirements
of the wearer. They are the best option for people
not wishing to wear disposable soft lenses full time,
or for those whose prescription falls outside of the
available disposable lens range. They can be personalised
with different tints and colours, and worn successfully
full time during waking hours. Currently, there are
no custom soft contact lenses suitable for sleeping
in.
People with moderate to high amounts
of astigmatism often find contact lenses easier to
get used to and more visually comfortable than glasses.
Custom soft toric lenses are individually designed
for such people, and the vast majority end up preferring
contact lens wear to spectacle wear. These contact
lenses are usually worn full time instead of glasses,
but never on an extended wear basis (sleeping in the
lenses).
Disposable,
or frequent replacement, contact lenses are
those which are replaced after one, fourteen
or thirty wears. The choice of lens depends
on your spectacle prescription, intended wearing
schedule and eye health needs.
The
range of spectacle prescriptions which can be
corrected with disposable soft lenses is constantly
expanding. A significant amount of astigmatism
is able to be corrected in soft disposable toric
contact lenses, and for suitable people, these
are generally very successful. Coloured disposable
contact lenses are available for lower prescriptions,
but are not currently available for people with
astigmatism.

Daily
disposable soft contact lenses are designed
for single use only - they are thrown away at
the end of each day. The great advantage of
these lenses is that the wearer starts each
day with a fresh pair of lenses, and cleaning,
storage and maintenance of the contact lenses
is not necessary. Daily disposable lenses are
an excellent option for travelling and activities
where the lenses may become soiled, tainted
or easily lost; for example, swimming and other
water activities. They are very convenient,
and the best choice for people who wear their
contact lenses infrequently (less than 1-2 times
a week), because an unused daily disposable
lens in its packet will keep for many months.
Daily
disposable lenses are available in a wide range
of short sighted and long sighted powers, however,
only a small degree of astigmatism can be adequately
corrected by these lenses. |

Finally there is the more popular form of disposable
soft contact lenses that are worn up to thirty
nights and then thrown away to be replaced by
a new fresh pair of lenses. These lenses were
developed in association with the CSIRO over
ten years ago and are now worn in over 30 countries
throughout the world.
The comfort
and ease of these lenses have made them the
most popular form of contact lens wear in our
practices. These are available for people who
are shortsighted and longsighted, and have recently
become available for people with certain amounts
of astigmatism. |
